Projects : Power Cables : Sweden Poland Link (SwePol)

In order to ensure that sufficient electric power is available in Sweden at all times, a power cable link between Sweden and Poland was installed in 1999. ABB High Voltage Cable AB was awarded the supply and installation contract by Vattenvall Transmission AB. Five Oceans Services carried out the offshore and near shore installation works of this turn key project within the required installation timeframe.
The installation comprised the lay and burial of 1 High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable and 2 bundled Metallic Current Return (MCR) cables. Both cables were succesfully buried to the pre-specified depth of 1.0 - 1.5 m in the seabed with soil strength of 5 - 80 kPA.

The total length of the cable route was 240 km. Water depths along the route varied between 5 and 90 meters.

Characteristics of the Cables:
Type of Cable : HVDC Cable MCR Cable
Conductor Size : 2100 mm/sq. 630 mm/sq
Weight (in air) : 67.3 kg/m 10.5 kg/m
Outer Diameter : 141 mm 57 mm
Min. Bend. Rad. : 5 m 4 m
Max. Tens. Load : 90 kN 50 kN

In order to successfully complete the SWEPOL Cable Link Project, Five Oceans Services manufactured specialized cable equipment. The equipment utilized included, but was not limited to:

  • Cable loading equipment
  • Cable lay equipment
  • Cable trenching equipment

In addition to the above, dedicated support equipment such as high accurate positioning systems (DGPS and USBL), as well as typical inspection and monitoring equipment (Sea Eye ROV and Innovatum Ultra System) ensured that a high level of confidence was achieved and maintained throughout the project
